By August 6, local papers were reporting that Lizzie, the younger of Andrew Borden’s two daughters, was a suspect. Most disturbingly, she’d attempted to purchase the poison prussic acid at the local pharmacy on August 3. Rumors circulated that Lizze and her step-mother did not get along. The police were convinced that the crime was committed by someone in the house, and the older sister, Emma, was not at home at the time.
The bodies, hacked horribly to death, received not the 40 + 41 blows of the poem, but a total of 29. Yet, there was no blood at the scene of the crime except for on the bodies themselves, and the lack of blood, or a definite murder weapon, left reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury, which returned a verdict of Not Guilty after only an hour and a half of deliberation. The trial, the papers said, was full of surprises, with the prosecution offering a wide range of theories and the defense (led by a former Governor of the Commonwealth) shooting them down. Cross-examination was said to be theatrical and impressive. In addition, the judge disallowed the testimony of the pharmacist, so evidence that Lizzie may have wished to poison someone, perhaps her parents, was never presented to the jury.
After her acquittal, Lizzie and her sister bought a home in Fall River. Emma moved away in 1905, but Lizzie stayed there until her death in 1927.
